The Indian Head Half Eagle, designed by Bela Lyon Pratt, is notable for its incuse (recessed) design, a significant departure from traditional raised relief coinage. This innovative design was championed by President Theodore Roosevelt and marked a new artistic direction for US coinage. The coin's production ceased with the Great Depression and President Roosevelt's Executive Order 6102, which effectively removed gold coins from circulation.
