- How accurate is AI coin identification from a photo?
- It is a strong first guess, not a professional attribution. Many coin types share designs across years and mints, and a photo cannot show weight, edge reeding, or fine wear. Treat the result as a starting point and confirm grade, authenticity, and value with a numismatist or a certified grading service before buying, selling, or insuring.
- What kind of photo works best?
- Even, indirect light with no glare, a plain background, and the coin filling most of the frame. Photograph the obverse (the side with the portrait or main design) straight on, in focus, so the date, legends, and any mint mark are readable.
- Can it identify old, foreign, and ancient coins?
- Yes. US coins, world coins, ancient and medieval pieces, bullion, commemoratives, tokens, and medals are all in scope. Objects that are not numismatic, such as buttons, poker chips, or jewelry, are flagged as not a coin.
