1901-S Barber Quarter

The 1901-S is widely regarded as the key date of the entire Barber quarter series (1892-1916). Its mintage was tiny compared to other dates in the run, and because so few pieces survive in any condition, it commands strong prices even in well-worn grades.

Collectors building a complete date-and-mintmark set of Barber quarters typically consider the 1901-S the single hardest and most expensive coin to acquire, often saving it for last.

The Barber quarter was designed by Chief Engraver Charles E. Barber and was struck from 1892 through 1916 as part of a broader redesign of United States silver coinage ordered in the early 1890s. The San Francisco Mint produced quarters throughout this period to serve commerce on the West Coast, but in 1901 it struck an unusually small number of quarters relative to demand for the denomination.

Most of the 1901-S quarters that were made entered circulation and were used for decades, so surviving examples are frequently found heavily worn. Collectors and dealers only fully appreciated the coin's scarcity well after the series ended, by which time many pieces had already been lost to wear, melting, or handling as ordinary pocket change.

The obverse shows Liberty facing right wearing a Phrygian cap banded with the word LIBERTY, with a laurel wreath, thirteen stars surrounding the portrait, and the date below. The reverse depicts a heraldic eagle with wings spread, holding arrows and an olive branch, a shield on its breast, encircled by UNITED STATES OF AMERICA above and QUARTER DOLLAR below.

The mintmark S appears on the reverse below the eagle, just above the letters denoting the denomination. Because the coin is so rare, buyers should be especially cautious of added or altered mintmarks and should look for a coin with an S that matches the size, shape, and placement seen on genuine San Francisco Barber quarters of the era.

Because of its extreme scarcity, the 1901-S carries significant value even in the lowest collectible grades, and prices rise sharply as grade improves, with problem-free, well-struck examples in mid and higher circulated grades commanding especially strong premiums. Uncirculated examples are exceptionally rare and are among the most valuable coins in the entire Barber series.

Value is driven heavily by authenticity and originality, since the coin's high price has historically made it a target for counterfeiting and mintmark alteration, so professional grading and authentication are commonly sought by buyers and sellers alike.
