Huguenot-Walloon Tercentenary Half Dollar

The Huguenot-Walloon Tercentenary half dollar commemorates the 300th anniversary of the 1624 arrival of Walloon and Huguenot Protestant settlers who helped found New Netherland, the Dutch colony that later became New York. It is one of several classic commemoratives that honor early colonial settlement history rather than statehood anniversaries.

The coin's obverse pays tribute to two prominent Protestant leaders associated with the Huguenot and Walloon movements, giving it a distinctly European historical dimension within the American commemorative series.

The Huguenot-Walloon New Netherland Commission organized tercentenary celebrations in 1924 to mark three centuries since Walloon families sailed to North America and established an early settlement that grew into New Netherland. Congress authorized a commemorative half dollar to support these observances, with the design executed by Mint Chief Engraver George T. Morgan.

The obverse depicts the conjoined busts of Admiral Gaspard de Coligny, a French Huguenot leader, and William the Silent, Prince of Orange, both important figures in the broader Protestant Reformation movement in Europe that led many Huguenots and Walloons to seek refuge and new opportunities abroad.

The reverse commemorates the actual voyage by depicting the ship Nieuw Nederland, which carried some of the earliest Walloon settlers to the New World in 1624.

The obverse shows the conjoined busts of Admiral Coligny and William the Silent facing right, with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA arched above and HALF DOLLAR below. The reverse depicts a three-masted sailing ship, the Nieuw Nederland, with HUGUENOT-WALLOON TERCENTENARY and the dates 1624-1924 in the surrounding legend.

The coin is struck in 90% silver with the standard half dollar diameter and reeded edge, issued only in 1924 from the Philadelphia Mint with no mint mark. Since it was produced in a single year and design, identification focuses on confirming sharp detail in the portrait busts and ship rigging, areas that show wear first on circulated pieces.

The Huguenot-Walloon half dollar had a fairly ample mintage for a classic commemorative and remains one of the more accessible issues in the series in circulated and typical uncirculated grades. Gem examples with strong original luster and clean surfaces still bring a solid premium, as with most coins in this series.

Value is driven primarily by condition and eye appeal rather than rarity, and problem-free, certified examples are generally preferred in the market over raw or cleaned coins.
