India 10 Rupees Commemorative

The India 10 Rupees Commemorative shown here is the bi-metallic ten-rupee coin issued in 2015 to honor the Rajput ruler Maharana Pratap of Mewar. The pictured face depicts Maharana Pratap in armor holding a sword, accompanied by a Devanagari inscription naming him. Coins of this type were struck to mark the 475th anniversary of his birth in 1540.

Like all circulating and commemorative ₹10 coins of this period, it is a two-metal (bi-metallic) piece: a lighter outer ring surrounds a darker central disc. It carries a face value of 10 rupees and was produced by the India Government Mint. The commemorative theme appears on one face, while the other carries the standard national emblem and denomination shared across the ₹10 series.

Maharana Pratap (1540-1597) was the ruler of Mewar in present-day Rajasthan and is remembered in India for his prolonged resistance against the Mughal empire of Akbar, most famously at the Battle of Haldighati in 1576. He remains a widely celebrated regional and national figure, which is why the government chose to commemorate him on coinage.

India introduced bi-metallic ₹10 coins in the mid-2000s, and over the following years the denomination became a favored canvas for commemorative themes marking anniversaries, institutions, and historical figures. The Maharana Pratap coin belongs to this ongoing series and is tied to the 2015 observance of his 475th birth anniversary. Coins were struck at the India Government Mints, which are identified by small mint marks beneath the date on the emblem side.

The opposite face (not visible in this photo) follows the standard ₹10 pattern: the Lion Capital of Ashoka state emblem with "सत्यमेव जयते" below it, "भारत" and "INDIA" flanking the emblem, and the rupee symbol with the numeral 10 and the year.

Physically the coin is bi-metallic, roughly 27 mm in diameter, with an outer ring of aluminium-bronze (golden tone) around an inner disc of copper-nickel (paler, silvery tone). The whole piece weighs on the order of 7.7 grams. The two-color construction, the 27 mm size, and the armored Maharana Pratap portrait together identify the type. Look for a small mint mark below the year on the emblem side to attribute the striking mint.

This is a modern commemorative struck for circulation and collector sets, so it is common and its value is modest. Worn examples are worth close to their face value of 10 rupees, while clean, uncirculated pieces carry a small collector premium above face.

Because the mintages are large and the coin is recent, condition and eye appeal are the main drivers of any premium. Uncirculated coins with full luster, or examples still in original mint packaging, are the most desirable. As a base-metal modern issue it has no bullion value, so its worth rests on collector demand rather than metal content.
