French West Africa 1 Franc

The French West Africa 1 Franc is a small, very lightweight aluminum coin dated 1948, issued for the French colonial federation of Afrique Occidentale Francaise. Its low weight and pale, matte silvery-gray color are immediately noticeable, because aluminum feels far lighter in the hand than the bronze, nickel, or silver coins collectors are used to.

The obverse carries an allegorical female profile head, in the tradition of the personified figure of the Republic used widely on French and French-colonial coinage, together with the word FRANC. The reverse states the denomination as a large numeral 1 with the federation's name, AFRIQUE-OCCIDENTALE FRANCAISE, spelled out around it.

As a minor circulating coin, the 1 Franc served as everyday small change across the French West African territories in the years just after the Second World War. It is a compact, single-year type that is popular with collectors of French colonial and West African coinage.

French West Africa (Afrique Occidentale Francaise) was a federation of French colonial territories in West Africa, grouping possessions such as Senegal, French Sudan, Guinea, Ivory Coast, Dahomey, Niger, Upper Volta, and Mauritania under a single administration. Coinage inscribed for the federation circulated across these territories rather than for a single colony.
