1972 Eisenhower Dollar (Type 2)

The 1972 Eisenhower dollar exists in three recognized reverse varieties, commonly labeled Type 1, Type 2, and Type 3, that differ subtly in how the Earth and its landmasses are rendered in the background of the moon-landing scene. Type 2 is the scarcest and most sought-after of the three, making it a favorite target for variety collectors working the series.

Because the differences are found in fine design details rather than an outright minting mistake, this coin is best described as a recognized design variety rather than a mint error.

After the Eisenhower dollar's 1971 debut, engravers made adjustments to the reverse hub used to strike the coins, apparently to correct or refine the appearance of the Earth's landmasses near Florida in the design. This resulted in multiple reverse hub types being used in the same year, 1972, at the Philadelphia mint before a more consistent design was settled on for later dates.

Reverse: The eagle-landing-on-the-moon design common to the series, but Type 2 shows a noticeably higher-relief, more detailed rendering of the Earth's landmasses compared to the flatter, less distinct Type 1 Earth, and differs from the revised Type 3 used later.

Because the differences are subtle, collectors typically compare a candidate coin closely against reference images of all three types, focusing on the clarity and relief of the small globe near the eagle, to confirm which variety they hold.

Type 2 is by far the scarcest of the three 1972 varieties and commands a substantial premium over common Eisenhower dollars, with well-preserved examples valued at a level well above face value and above typical common-date Ike dollars, reflecting genuine collector demand for this recognized rarity within the series.
