Somalia Silver Leopard

The Somalia Silver Leopard is a modern bullion coin issued under the authority of the Republic of Somalia as part of the long-running "African Wildlife" series. Each coin contains one troy ounce of fine silver and carries a face value of 100 Shillings, though like most bullion issues its market value tracks the silver price rather than that nominal figure.

The design shown here features a leopard in a natural pose accompanied by the "African Wildlife" inscription on the obverse, while the reverse carries the Somali coat of arms. The leopard is the animal chosen for the series in recent years, replacing the elephant that appeared on earlier dates. This particular coin is dated 2022.

Somalia's African Wildlife silver bullion program has been produced for many years by the Bavarian State Mint (Bayerisches Hauptmünzamt) in Germany, which strikes the coins on behalf of the Somali monetary authority. For most of the series' history the flagship design was an African elephant, and the coins were widely marketed simply as the "Somalia Silver Elephant."

Beginning with the 2019 issue, the series switched its featured animal from the elephant to a leopard, and leopard designs have appeared on subsequent annual dates including 2022. The animal and its pose are updated from year to year while the overall format, weight, and denomination remain consistent, giving the series a recognizable identity across dates.

As a low-mintage bullion issue from a non-Western national program, the Somalia Silver Leopard sits alongside other "national wildlife" bullion coins that compete with mainstream sovereign issues by offering distinctive annual animal designs. It is a contemporary product of the international bullion market rather than a circulating Somali currency piece.

The obverse is the key diagnostic: a leopard rendered in a naturalistic setting, paired with an "African Wildlife" inscription. Look also for the year of issue and the weight and fineness statement typical of modern bullion (one troy ounce of fine silver). The reverse displays the Somali coat of arms, which on this series stands in for the traditional national-emblem side and carries the country name and the 100 Shillings denomination.

Physically the coin follows the standard one-ounce silver bullion format: struck in high-purity silver (the series is issued in fine, typically .9999, silver), roughly 38–39 mm in diameter, with a plain or reeded edge depending on issue. The bright white metal, ounce weight, and crisp modern strike distinguish it from older, worn, or lower-purity coins.

Because the animal design changes by year, the combination of the leopard image, the "African Wildlife" wording, the Somali coat of arms, and the 2022 date together confirm this specific issue rather than an elephant-dated coin from the same series.

As a modern one-ounce fine-silver bullion coin, the Somalia Silver Leopard's baseline value is tied to its silver content, so it generally trades at the prevailing spot price of one ounce of silver plus a dealer premium. Premiums on national wildlife coins like this are typically modest but can run a little above generic rounds because of the branded annual design and government issuer.

Condition, packaging, and demand for a particular date drive any collector premium above melt. Pristine, uncirculated examples in original mint tubes or capsules, and dates with lower reported mintages, may command more than common examples. Coins that are toned, scratched, or cleaned typically sell nearer to bullion value.
