Australian Silver Koala

The Australian Silver Koala is a bullion and collector coin produced by the Perth Mint, first issued in 2007 to complement its earlier Silver Kookaburra series with another beloved Australian native animal as the design theme. The koala, widely recognized around the world as a symbol of Australia, gives the coin strong appeal to both bullion investors and collectors of wildlife-themed coinage.

Like the Kookaburra series, the Silver Koala changes its reverse design every year, depicting the koala in different poses and natural settings, which has helped the coin build a dedicated following among design collectors in addition to typical silver bullion buyers.

The coin is produced primarily in a one troy ounce standard weight, with the Perth Mint also issuing other weights and formats in certain years to expand the product's appeal across different budgets.

The Perth Mint launched the Silver Koala in 2007, building on the established success of its Silver Kookaburra bullion program by introducing a second annually redesigned Australian wildlife series. The koala was a natural choice given its status as one of the most globally recognized symbols of Australian fauna.

The obverse of the Silver Koala features the reigning British monarch's portrait as head of state of Australia, along with the country name AUSTRALIA and the denomination.

The reverse depicts a koala in a design unique to each year of issue, often shown climbing or resting in a eucalyptus tree, along with the date and weight and fineness markings.

The standard coin is struck in one troy ounce of .999 fine silver, with other weights and larger formats issued in certain years; collectors distinguish specific years by the unique koala artwork combined with the printed date, similar in approach to the companion Silver Kookaburra series.

As a bullion coin, the Silver Koala's baseline value closely tracks the spot price of silver, with a modest premium reflecting minting costs and its collectible, annually changing design.

Certain years with lower mintages or unique design elements can command premiums above standard bullion pricing, particularly among collectors focused on completing a full date run of the series.
