How to Identify the South Africa Farthing

Start with the obverse portrait and legend. A South Africa Farthing shows a royal head ringed by an abbreviated Latin legend; if it includes REX IND IMP you have a King's issue struck before 1947, and a left-facing head with George VI's name places it in the 1936-1952 reign, as on the 1939 coin here. A queen's portrait and legend instead indicate a later Elizabeth II farthing.

Turn to the reverse to separate the coin from the British farthing. The Union piece carries a small South African bird design, not the seated Britannia used in Britain, and the country name appears in both English and Afrikaans. That bilingual naming is a reliable tell: British and most other Commonwealth farthings are English-only.

Use size and metal as a cross-check. The farthing is bronze, small at roughly 20 mm across, and clearly the tiniest of the Union's three bronze coins; the halfpenny and penny are visibly larger. A genuine coin is non-magnetic and light in the hand, and a browning or red-brown bronze surface is normal. A silvery or magnetic coin of this size is not a farthing.

Read the date and country name carefully, since the series spans multiple reigns and both George V and George VI Kings' issues share the REX IND IMP style. The date fixes the year and reign, and the mint was Pretoria; there is no separate mint-mark letter to hunt for. Note that some years are scarcer than the common run, so the date matters for value.

Be alert to look-alikes and condition traps. Do not confuse the Union farthing with British, Australian, or other Commonwealth farthings of the same era, which name their own country and lack the Afrikaans legend. On a small bronze coin, harsh cleaning, corrosion, and artificial toning are the main hazards; for any coin claimed as a scarce date or high grade, get authentication from a reputable dealer or grading service before relying on it.

Frequently asked questions

How do I tell the South Africa Farthing from a British farthing?

The Union coin has a South African bird reverse and a bilingual English/Afrikaans country name, while the British farthing shows Britannia and names Britain. The portraits and legends differ too.

Does the farthing have a mint mark?

No separate mint-mark letter to look for; Union farthings were struck at the Pretoria Mint. You identify the coin by the royal legend, the bird reverse, the bilingual name, and the date.

What size and metal is a genuine farthing?

Bronze, small at about 20 mm in diameter and light in weight, and non-magnetic. It is the smallest of the Union's bronze coins, clearly below the halfpenny and penny.

Why does the reign matter when identifying it?

The series spans George V, George VI, and Elizabeth II. The REX IND IMP legend marks a King's issue before 1947, while a queen's legend marks a later coin, so the portrait and date pin down the year.
