How to Identify the British Penny

Start with size and metal. The pre-decimal penny is a large, heavy bronze coin about 30-31 mm across and near 9.4 grams, noticeably bigger and thicker than the halfpenny or the silver and cupro-nickel coins of the same era. A warm brown color and that broad diameter are the first clues you are holding a penny rather than a smaller denomination.
Read the obverse portrait and legend. A George VI penny shows a bare male head facing left, with an abbreviated Latin legend naming him king. Look for wording built from "GEORGIVS VI", "D:G:BR:OMN:" (by the grace of God, of all the Britains), "REX" (king), and "F:D" or "FID:DEF" (defender of the faith). The presence or absence of "IND:IMP" (Emperor of India) helps date the coin: it appears 1937-1948 and is dropped from 1949.
Check the reverse and date. The George VI penny reverse shows the seated figure of Britannia with trident and shield, plus ONE PENNY and the year. The date is the single most important detail for a collector, so read it carefully; George VI pennies run 1937 to 1952, and not every year was struck for general circulation. Confirm the portrait direction matches the monarch, since successive kings and queens face alternate ways.
Distinguish look-alikes. Earlier pennies of George V and Edward VII also show Britannia but a different, named male portrait, while later Elizabeth II pennies show a female portrait facing right. Do not confuse the penny with the smaller bronze halfpenny (which shows a ship on George VI issues) or with brass threepence and other denominations. Reading the legend name and the reverse design settles the reign quickly.
Authenticate and grade with care. Genuine pennies of this period are common, so outright fakes are unusual, but cleaned, corroded, or artificially toned coins are frequent and hurt value. Judge grade by the sharpness of Britannia and the king's hair, and by how much original red bronze color survives. For scarce dates or high-grade coins where value is significant, compare against reference images or seek an experienced dealer before paying a premium.
