How to Identify the British Decimal Half Penny

Start with size and metal. The decimal half penny is the smallest and lightest British decimal coin, about 17 mm across and under 2 grams, struck in warm brown bronze with a plain (smooth) edge. If a bronze coin looks noticeably tinier than a decimal 1p and has a plain edge, you are likely holding a half penny.
Confirm the reverse. Look for a single arched royal crown above the denomination. Coins dated 1971 to 1981 read "NEW PENNY" with the fraction ½; coins from 1982 onward read "HALF PENNY." This crown-over-denomination reverse is the coin's clearest fingerprint and immediately separates it from the 1p (crowned portcullis) and 2p (Prince of Wales feathers).
Check the obverse and legend. The right-facing Machin portrait of Elizabeth II is surrounded by an abbreviated Latin legend along the lines of "ELIZABETH II D.G.REG.F.D." plus the date. On worn coins the D.G. and REG abbreviations are the easiest to read; the date sits at the bottom of the portrait side and should fall in the 1971–1984 range.
Watch for look-alikes and read the date carefully. The old pre-decimal halfpenny is larger and shows a sailing ship (or Britannia on earlier types), not a crown, so it is easy to distinguish. Because the decimal half penny is so common, authentication is rarely a concern; the main tasks are grading condition, reading the exact date, and noting whether the coin is a "NEW PENNY" or "HALF PENNY" wording variant.
