Brief Description

The reverse of the coin depicts a voyageur (an indentured fur trader) and a guide paddling a birch-bark canoe past a pine-covered island. The obverse (not shown) features the second effigy of Queen Elizabeth II.

Historical Significance

The Voyageur design was first introduced in 1935 to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of King George V. It became the standard design for the Canadian silver dollar and later the large nickel dollar, symbolizing Canada's history in the fur trade and early exploration.
