Brief Description
The obverse features the profile of Abraham Lincoln facing right, designed by Victor David Brenner. The inscription 'IN GOD WE TRUST' is above his head, and 'LIBERTY' is to the left.
Historical Significance
The Lincoln Cent was first issued in 1909 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's birth. It was the first U.S. coin to feature a person's image, rather than a representation of Liberty. The 'Wheat Cent' design was used until 1958.
