Jefferson Nickel

Brief Description

A heavily corroded and worn United States five-cent piece featuring the profile of Thomas Jefferson on the obverse. The metal shows significant environmental damage, pitting, and green verdigris.

Historical Significance

The Jefferson Nickel replaced the Buffalo Nickel in 1938 and remains the standard design for the U.S. five-cent piece. Designed by Felix Schlag, it commemorates the third U.S. President and his home, Monticello.

Estimated Value

$0.05 (Face value only due to severe damage and corrosion)

Care Instructions

Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners as they will further damage the metal. Place in a non-PVC coin flip to prevent the green corrosion (verdigris) from spreading to other coins in a collection.
