Canadian 1-Cent Coin (Penny)

Brief Description

The reverse side features a twig with two maple leaves, the date '2009', the word 'CANADA', and the face value '1 CENT'. The obverse (not shown) features the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.

Historical Significance

The maple leaf design by G.E. Kruger-Gray was used on Canadian pennies from 1937 until the denomination was retired. This 2009 issue was minted just 3 years before Canada ceased production of the penny in 2012 due to high manufacturing costs relative to face value.

Estimated Value

$0.01 - $0.05 USD (Face value or small premium for uncirculated specimens)

Care Instructions

Keep in a dry environment to prevent corrosion of the steel core. Avoid cleaning with abrasive chemicals or cloths, as this can damage the thin copper plating and decrease numismatic value.
