Lincoln Wheat Cent

Brief Description

A copper-colored coin featuring the profile of Abraham Lincoln facing right on the obverse. Above him is 'IN GOD WE TRUST', to the left is 'LIBERTY', and the date '1955' is on the right.

Historical Significance

The Lincoln Cent was first issued in 1909 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's birth. It was the first US circulating coin to feature a person's portrait. The wheat reverse design used in 1955 was the original design used from 1909 until 1958.

Estimated Value

$0.02 - $0.50 (Note: This is a standard strike, not the famous and highly valuable 1955 Doubled Die error).

Care Instructions

Store in a cool, dry place to prevent further oxidation (verdigris). Avoid cleaning the coin with chemicals or abrasives, as 'cleaning' often removes the surface patina and significantly reduces numismatic value. Handle by the edges to avoid leaving finger oils on the surface.
