Historical Significance
Designed by Charles E. Barber, this series is famous for the 'Racketeer Nickel' incident of 1883 where the lack of the word 'Cents' led people to gold-plate them and pass them off as $5 gold coins. This 1896 specimen belongs to the established design period after the word 'Cents' was added.
Estimated Value
$1.00 - $10.00 (Due to heavy wear/corrosion)
Care Instructions
Do not clean or polish the coin, as this can destroy its numismatic value. Store in a cool, dry place inside a PVC-free coin holder to prevent further environmental damage.
