Lincoln Wheat Cent (Lincoln Penny)

Brief Description

The reverse side of the coin features two stalks of wheat flanking the words 'ONE CENT' and 'UNITED STATES OF AMERICA', with the motto 'E PLURIBUS UNUM' arching along the top edge. The obverse features a profile of Abraham Lincoln.

Historical Significance

Introduced in 1909 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's birth, it was the first U.S. coin to feature a person's portrait. The 'Wheat' design on the reverse was used until 1958 when it was replaced by the Lincoln Memorial design.

Estimated Value

$0.02 - $5.00+ (Common circulated wheat cents are generally worth 2-5 cents, though key dates and high-grade specimens can be worth significantly more).

Care Instructions

Do not clean the coin, as scrubbing or using chemical cleaners can damage the surface and significantly reduce its numismatic value. Store in a cool, dry place inside a non-PVC coin holder or archival-safe sleeve.
