Brief Description

The reverse features a seated Māori warrior holding a taiaha (fighting staff) and wearing a piupiu (flax skirt). The obverse (not shown) features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.

Historical Significance

1965 was the penultimate year for the New Zealand shilling before the country transitioned to decimal currency in 1967. The Māori warrior design by George James Berry became iconic of New Zealand coinage.
