Franklin Half Dollar

Brief Description

The obverse features a profile portrait of Benjamin Franklin looking to the right. Above him is the word 'LIBERTY' and below him is the motto 'IN GOD WE TRUST'. The date '1951' is located to the right of his collar.

Historical Significance

Introduced in 1948, this coin replaced the Walking Liberty design. It was the first United States circulating coin to feature a person who was not a president. Benjamin Franklin was chosen to honor his contributions to the founding of the nation and his role as a scientist and diplomat. The series was cut short in 1963 following the assassination of John F. Kennedy, after which the Kennedy Half Dollar was introduced.

Estimated Value

$10 - $25 (Value depends heavily on the specific mint mark on the reverse and the overall condition/grade of the coin; silver bullion value is approximately $10).

Care Instructions

Do not clean or polish the coin, as this can severely damage its numismatic value by creating micro-scratches. Handle the coin by its edges to prevent oils from skin transferring to the surface. Store in an acid-free holder or a cool, dry place.
