Brief Description

The obverse features the 'Second Portrait' of Queen Elizabeth II wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara. The reverse (not shown but characteristic of this issue) features the Prince of Wales's feathers badge and the words 'NEW PENCE'.

Historical Significance

This coin was part of the first decimal series of coins introduced in the UK. The word 'NEW' was included to distinguish the decimal pence from the pre-decimal pennies until 1982 when the wording was changed to 'TWO PENCE'.
