Susan B. Anthony Dollar

Brief Description

The obverse features a profile portrait of Susan B. Anthony, a prominent leader in the women’s suffrage movement. The design is notably 11-sided (hendecagon) within a circular border. The reverse (not pictured) depicts an eagle landing on the Moon, based on the Apollo 11 mission insignia.

Historical Significance

This was the first U.S. circulating coin to feature a real woman rather than an allegorical figure. It was introduced to replace the bulky Eisenhower Dollar but faced public resistance because of its size and color, which were easily confused with the quarter-dollar.

Estimated Value

$1.00 - $3.00 (Standard circulated specimens are usually worth face value; uncirculated or proof versions carry a small premium).

Care Instructions

Store in a cool, dry place. Avoid cleaning or polishing the coin, as chemical abrasives can permanently damage the surface and reduce any collector value. Use PVC-free plastic holders or acid-free paper envelopes for long-term storage.
