Liberty Head Nickel

Brief Description

The reverse of the coin features an agricultural wreath of wheat, corn, and cotton surrounding a Roman numeral 'V' (representing the number 5). 'UNITED STATES OF AMERICA' is inscribed above the wreath.

Historical Significance

Commonly known as the 'V Nickel,' it was designed by Charles E. Barber. The 1883 version initially excluded the word 'CENTS,' leading to 'racketeer nickels' where scammers gold-plated them to pass off as five-dollar gold pieces. The word 'CENTS' was added later that year.

Estimated Value

$1.00 - $10.00 (in well-circulated condition)

Care Instructions

Store in a cool, dry place within a PVC-free holder. Avoid cleaning or polishing, as this removes the natural patina and can significantly decrease the coin's collectible value.
