Brief Description

The obverse features the profile of Marianne, the national personification of the French Republic, wearing a Phrygian cap adorned with a laurel wreath. To her left is the year 1949, and behind her is a torch.

Historical Significance

This coin was minted during the French Fourth Republic. The 'Turin Type' design, originally created by Pierre Turin for silver coinage in the late 1920s, was reused for base metal coins following the post-WWII inflation that made silver too expensive for common circulation.
