Jefferson Nickel

Brief Description

Small silver-colored coin featuring the profile of Thomas Jefferson on the obverse and Monticello on the reverse. Notable for a large mint mark (P, D, or S) located above the dome of Monticello.

Historical Significance

Commonly known as 'War Nickels,' these were produced using silver and manganese to conserve nickel for military use during World War II. They are the only US nickels to contain silver.
