Brief Description

A United States quarter-dollar coin featuring George Washington on the obverse and an outline of Georgia with a peach on the reverse.

Historical Significance

This is the fourth coin released in the 50 State Quarters Program, which honored each state's admission to the Union. Georgia was the 4th state to ratify the Constitution in 1788.

Estimated Value

$0.25 in circulated condition; $1.00 - $5.00 in high uncirculated (MS-65+) grades.

Care Instructions

Handle by the edges to avoid transferring oils from skin. Do not clean or polish, as this can destroy numismatic value. Store in a cool, dry place in a PVC-free holder.

P (Philadelphia Mint)

Mintage & Rarity

Common; 451,184,000 minted at the Philadelphia facility in 1999.

Weight & Diameter

5.67 grams; 24.26 mm

Reeded (119 reeds)

Apparent Grade

Circulated (estimated Extremely Fine to About Uncirculated); shows minor surface marks and typical wear from circulation.

Obverse (Front)

The portrait of George Washington by William Cousins (based on John Flanagan's 1932 design) with 'UNITED STATES OF AMERICA', 'LIBERTY', 'IN GOD WE TRUST', and 'QUARTER DOLLAR'.

Reverse (Back)

Features a peach (the state fruit) inside an outline of the state, flanked by sprigs from a Live Oak (the state tree). A banner reads 'WISDOM, JUSTICE, MODERATION'. It includes 'GEORGIA 1788', '1999', and 'E PLURIBUS UNUM'. Designer: T. James Ferrell.

What Drives This Coin's Value

Most circulated examples are only worth face value. Value increases for high-grade Uncirculated specimens, Proofs, or those with recognized mint errors.

Similar Coins

Other State Quarters from the 1999-2008 series; identifiable by the specific state name on the reverse.

Authenticity & Counterfeit Red Flags

Check for the distinct copper stripe on the edge. Counterfeits of common state quarters are extremely rare, though 'platinum' or 'gold' plated versions are often sold as novelties but have no extra numismatic value.

Notable Varieties & Errors

Look for die chips or major striking errors, though no major widespread varieties are attributed specifically to the 1999-P Georgia issue.
