Lincoln Wheat Cent

Brief Description

The obverse features a profile of Abraham Lincoln facing right with the motto 'IN GOD WE TRUST' above and 'LIBERTY' to the left. The year 1953 and an 'S' mint mark are on the right. The reverse typically features two wheat stalks framing the words 'ONE CENT' and 'UNITED STATES OF AMERICA'.

Historical Significance

Designed by Victor David Brenner and first issued in 1909 to commemorate the centennial of Lincoln's birth, this was the first regular-issue U.S. coin to feature a person's portrait. The 'S' mint mark indicates it was struck at the San Francisco Mint.

Estimated Value

$0.05 - $2.00 (depending on condition; higher for uncirculated specimens)

Care Instructions

Handle by the edges to avoid getting skin oils on the surface. Store in a cool, dry place inside an acid-free PVC-free holder or flip. Never clean the coin, as harsh chemicals or scrubbing can significantly reduce its numismatic value.
