Lincoln Wheat Cent

Brief Description

Obverse features the profile of Abraham Lincoln facing right, with the inscriptions 'IN GOD WE TRUST', 'LIBERTY', and '1941'. The reverse typically features two stalks of wheat framing 'ONE CENT' and 'UNITED STATES OF AMERICA'.

Historical Significance

Designed by Victor David Brenner and introduced in 1909 to commemorate Lincoln's 100th birthday, this was the first US regular-issue coin to feature a person's portrait. The 1941 edition was produced just before the US entered WWII and shifted copper usage to the war effort.
