Finnish 1 Euro Coin

Brief Description

A bi-metallic coin featuring a design of two whooper swans flying over a Finnish landscape on the inner circle, surrounded by the 12 stars of the European Union on the outer brass ring. The year 2002 is visible next to the swans.

Historical Significance

The whooper swan is the national bird of Finland. This design was created by the artist Pertti Mäkinen for a competition held to design the national side of the Finnish Euro coins after Finland joined the Eurozone as a founding member.
