Brief Description

The obverse features a profile portrait of Susan B. Anthony, a leader in the women's suffrage movement, surrounded by stars and the word LIBERTY. It has a distinctive eleven-sided inner rim.

Historical Significance

Introduced in 1979, it was the first circulating U.S. coin to depict a real woman (rather than an allegorical figure like Lady Liberty). It was intended to replace the paper dollar bill, but was largely unsuccessful because its size and color were too similar to the quarter.
