Historical Significance

This specific design of the Washington Quarter was modified starting in 1999 to accommodate the 50 State Quarters Program, followed by the District of Columbia and U.S. Territories Quarters, and the America the Beautiful Quarters. The original 1932 design by John Flanagan was updated by William Cousins.
