Brief Description

The obverse features the second portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Arnold Machin, wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara. The reverse (not shown) depicts St Edward's Crown.

Introduced on February 15, 1971, this coin was part of the United Kingdom's transition to a decimal currency system. It was the smallest denomination of the new 'New Pence' series but was eventually demonetized in 1984 due to inflation rendering it worth more in scrap metal than face value.
