Brief Description

The obverse (front) of the coin features a left-facing profile of Thomas Jefferson, the third U.S. President. The words "LIBERTY" and the year "2000" are inscribed along the top rim, and "IN GOD WE TRUST" is along the bottom rim. The reverse (back) typically features Monticello, Jefferson's primary plantation.

Historical Significance

The Jefferson Nickel was first minted in 1938, replacing the Buffalo Nickel. Thomas Jefferson was chosen to commemorate his immense contributions to the United States as a Founding Father, author of the Declaration of Independence, and third President. The design remained largely consistent until the Westward Journey series in the early 2000s, which introduced new reverse designs to celebrate the bicentennial of the Louisiana Purchase and the Lewis and Clark expedition.
