This design, known as the 'Jefferson Forward' obverse, was introduced in 2006 following the Westward Journey Nickel Series. It was the first time in U.S. mint history that a forward-facing portrait was used on a circulating coin, intended to symbolize Jefferson's vision for the future of the nation.
