Historical Significance

The Jefferson nickel was introduced in 1938, replacing the Buffalo nickel. Thomas Jefferson was chosen for the design to honor his role as a Founding Father and primary author of the Declaration of Independence. The 1990-P issue is part of the long-running series featuring Felix Schlag's original portrait design.
