Brief Description
The obverse features a profile portrait of Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap with wings, which many people mistakenly identified as the Roman god Mercury. The word 'LIBERTY' is around the top edge, the date '1935' is on the right, and 'IN GOD WE TRUST' is tucked under the chin. The coin shown is heavily worn and toned.
Historical Significance
Designed by Adolph A. Weinman, the Mercury Dime was minted between 1916 and 1945. The wings on Liberty's cap were intended to symbolize 'freedom of thought.' It replaced the Barber Dime and served as a primary unit of currency during the Great Depression and World War II.
Estimated Value
$2.00 - $5.00 (primarily based on silver melt value due to the heavy wear and condition seen in the image)
Care Instructions
Do not clean or polish the coin, as abrasive cleaning can severely damage the surface and reduce any numismatic value. Store in a cool, dry place inside a PVC-free plastic flip or archival-safe coin holder to prevent further oxidation or scratches.
