The reverse side features an American bison (buffalo) in the foreground and a sunflower in the background, representing the official state animal and flower of Kansas. The word 'KANSAS' and the date '1861' (the year of statehood) are at the top, and '2005' and 'E PLURIBUS UNUM' are at the bottom.

Historical Significance

This was the 34th coin released in the 50 State Quarters Program, which ran from 1999 to 2008 to honor each of the 50 states. It commemorates Kansas's entry into the Union and its natural heritage.
