Brief Description

The reverse features the Santa Maria ship above two hemispheres. The obverse (not pictured) depicts a bust of Christopher Columbus. The rim text reads 'WORLD'S COLUMBIAN EXPOSITION CHICAGO' and the date '1893'.

Historical Significance

This was the first commemorative coin ever issued by the United States. It was produced to help fund and celebrate the World's Columbian Exposition held in Chicago, marking the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus's voyage to the Americas.
