Brief Description

The obverse (front) of the coin features a portrait of Thomas Jefferson, the third U.S. President, facing left. The word "LIBERTY" and the year of issue "1995" are inscribed. The motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" is also visible. The reverse side typically features Monticello, Jefferson's primary plantation.

Historical Significance

The Jefferson Nickel was first minted in 1938 and replaced the Buffalo Nickel. The obverse design featuring Thomas Jefferson was created by Felix Schlag. The design remained largely unchanged until 2004 when a series of 'Westward Journey' nickels were released to commemorate the bicentennial of the Louisiana Purchase and the Lewis and Clark Expedition. The 1995 nickel is a standard issue and part of the long-running series featuring Jefferson and Monticello.
