Brief Description

The obverse (front) of the coin features a new rendering of Thomas Jefferson's portrait, designed by Joe Fitzgerald based on an original 1800 Rembrandt Peale portrait. Jefferson faces left, with 'IN GOD WE TRUST' and 'LIBERTY 2004' along the rim. This was part of the Westward Journey nickel series.

Historical Significance

The 2004 Westward Journey Nickel Series commemorated the bicentennials of the Louisiana Purchase and the Lewis and Clark expedition. The 'Peace Medal' obverse, and the 'Keelboat' reverse (not visible in this image) were the first redesigns of the nickel since 1938. The new obverse portrait of Jefferson was a significant change, marking a departure from Felix Schlag's original design, which was temporarily replaced for the 2004-2005 series.
