How to Identify the Pilgrim Tercentenary Half Dollar

What This Coin Is

Issued in 1920 and 1921, the Pilgrim Tercentenary Half Dollar commemorates the 300th anniversary of the Pilgrims' landing at Plymouth. It was designed by sculptor Cyrus Dallin and was sold in Massachusetts and beyond to mark the tercentenary celebrations.

Obverse Design & Inscriptions

The obverse shows a half-length figure of William Bradford, the first governor of Plymouth Colony, holding a large book, typically identified as a Bible. "PILGRIM TERCENTENARY" appears in the legend, and the date "1620-1920" is worked into the design.

Reverse Design & Inscriptions

The reverse depicts the Mayflower under full sail. "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "HALF DOLLAR" appear in the legend along with the mint's dedication to the Pilgrim landing.

Standard half dollar specifications: about 30.6mm in diameter, 12.5 grams, 90% silver, reeded edge.

Telling It Apart From Similar Coins

The two years in this series look almost identical except for one key detail: 1921-dated coins have "1620-1921" added into the obverse field, in addition to the original "1620-1920" inscription, to distinguish them from the more common 1920 issue. If you see only "1620-1920" on the obverse, it's a 1920 coin; if "1620-1921" also appears, it's the 1921 issue.

Judging Condition at a Glance

The 1920 issue is common and often found in high grade since many were saved as souvenirs. The 1921 issue is scarcer and less frequently found in top condition. Check Bradford's face, hat brim, and the book he holds for wear, and examine the Mayflower's sails and rigging on the reverse for flattening.

Authenticity Red Flags

Confirm weight (12.5 grams) and diameter (30.6mm), and check for a magnetic reaction, which would indicate a fake. Because the 1921 date commands a higher premium than the common 1920 issue, be alert to an added "1620-1921" inscription that looks re-engraved, scratched in, or inconsistent with the rest of the coin's surface — genuine examples have this detail as part of the original die strike, not added afterward.
