How to Identify the Canadian Silver Maple Leaf

What Is the Coin

The Canadian Silver Maple Leaf is a bullion coin struck by the Royal Canadian Mint (RCM) since 1988. It is produced in .9999 fine silver and is one of the most widely traded bullion coins in the world, popular for its high purity and evolving anti-counterfeiting features.

Obverse Design

The obverse carries the effigy of the reigning monarch. Coins struck through 2023 show Queen Elizabeth II in one of several portrait styles used over the decades (young laureate bust, then older portraits); coins from 2024 onward carry the effigy of King Charles III. The inscriptions "ELIZABETH II" (or "CHARLES III"), "D.G. REGINA" or similar Latin legend, and the date appear around the portrait, along with the "5 DOLLARS" face value.

Reverse Design

The reverse, designed by Walter Ott, features a single detailed maple leaf centered on a radiant, finely engraved background of radial lines. "CANADA" and the purity mark ".9999 FINE SILVER ARGENT PUR" appear around the rim.

Size, Weight, Metal & Edge

Each standard coin contains one troy ounce (31.10 g) of .9999 fine silver, with a diameter of 38 mm and a reeded edge. Fractional and multi-ounce versions exist but the 1 oz coin is by far the most common.

Security Features and Where to Look

Since 2014, coins include a micro-engraved maple leaf privy mark within the design, visible only under magnification, containing a tiny laser-etched number corresponding to the last digits of the year. Later issues (2018 onward) add radial line micro-engraving and textured surfaces that create a shimmering effect when tilted. These features sit within the maple leaf design on the reverse, not in a separate "mint mark" location, since the RCM does not use a traditional mint mark on this series.

Telling It Apart From Similar Coins

The Silver Maple Leaf is sometimes confused with other national silver bullion coins such as the American Silver Eagle or Austrian Silver Philharmonic. The maple leaf motif and "CANADA" inscription are unique identifiers; no other major bullion program uses this design. Older pre-2014 coins lack the microengraved privy mark, which is normal for genuine coins of that era and not itself a red flag.

Grading and Condition at a Glance

Because these are modern bullion coins struck in large numbers, collectors typically focus on surface preservation rather than rarity. Look for original mint luster, absence of hairlines or scratches, and undamaged edges. Coins kept in original mint tubes or capsules tend to retain sharper luster than loose, handled examples.

Authenticity Red Flags

Common counterfeits are struck in base metal or lower-purity silver and often show soft, mushy details in the maple leaf's veins and the radial background lines, which should be crisp and needle-sharp on genuine coins. A magnet test is a quick screen, since silver is not magnetic; a coin that is attracted to a strong magnet is not genuine. Weight and diameter that fall outside the stated tolerances are also a warning sign.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Silver Maple Leaf have a mint mark?

No traditional mint mark is used. Authenticity is instead confirmed by the micro-engraved maple leaf privy mark added to the design starting in 2014.

What purity is the coin?

It is struck in .9999 fine silver, one of the highest purities offered in any government bullion coin.

Whose portrait is on the obverse?

Queen Elizabeth II appears on coins dated through 2023; King Charles III appears on coins dated 2024 and later.

How can I quickly check if mine is fake?

Check weight (31.10 g) and diameter (38 mm), inspect the radial lines and leaf veins for sharpness, and confirm the coin is not magnetic.
